What ships

Parts are dense, so they usually bill on actual weight rather than volume — the opposite of most China orders. Sea freight becomes worth it much sooner here than it does for light goods.

How the landed cost of auto parts is worked out

Weight decides the freight

Most goods from China bill on volumetric weight, because they are bulkier than they are heavy. Metal auto parts are dense enough that actual weight is usually the higher figure, which is why a parts estimate moves less between quotes than one for consumer goods.

The exceptions are body panels, bumpers, light housings, air filters and plastic trim. They are mostly shaped air, bill on volume, and can cost more to ship than to buy. Mixing dense and bulky parts in one shipment averages the difference out.

Where sea freight starts to win

Under about 30 kg: express air, typically 3–7 days.
30–100 kg: consolidated air, typically 7–14 days, with clearance to arrange.
Above roughly 100 kg: sea LCL is clearly cheaper, at 25–45 days plus inland.
A pallet or more of metal parts: sea.

What the estimate does not settle

Duty is assessed on the classification of the part in your country, and classification follows what the part is, so the description you enter matters. The figure shown is an assumption for your destination, not a customs filing.

Approval marks on brakes, lighting and glazing are a market-access question rather than a cost line. It is worth answering before you order, and the certification guide explains how to check a mark is real.

Common questions

Why does a bumper cost more to ship than a brake disc?: A bumper is mostly shaped air and bills on its volume, so it can cost more to ship than to buy. A brake disc is dense and bills on its weight, so its freight follows its mass.
When is sea freight worth choosing for parts?: Roughly above 100 kg, or a pallet of metal parts. The sea LCL rate is then clearly cheaper, in exchange for 25–45 days plus inland transport.
Does the estimate include duty?: It shows an assumed duty treatment for your destination. What your customs authority actually assesses depends on how it classifies the part.
