Private label auto parts
Private labelling aftermarket parts is cheap and easy to arrange, which is exactly why it deserves thought. Once your name is on the box you are the one the buyer comes back to, and in several markets you are the responsible party in the legal sense too.
The commercial case is real. The obligations that come with it are the part people skip.

What it costs
- Printed boxes: usually 1,000+ per part number, at a modest cost per box.
- Labels only: a few hundred minimum, far cheaper, and visually much weaker.
- Your logo on the part itself: needs a tool modification, so thousands of units.
- Artwork and a proof round: a small fee, sometimes absorbed.
What you take on
In most markets, putting your name on a product makes you the producer for liability purposes. The factory that made it is no longer the party a regulator or a claimant looks at. That is a reason to private-label consumables and a reason to think hard about doing it to safety-critical parts.
It also means batch consistency becomes your problem. A factory changing material between runs is an inconvenience when the box says their name and a recall when it says yours.
Where it is worth doing
- High-turnover consumables — filters, bulbs, wipers, fluids packaging — where the brand builds repeat purchase and the risk is low.
- Kits and assortments that nobody else packages the same way, which is a real differentiator rather than a label.
- Anything you already sell in volume, where the packaging cost per unit disappears.
What to settle in writing
- Batch consistency and what happens if material or supplier changes.
- Who holds the artwork and tooling you paid for.
- Whether the factory may sell the same part in your packaging to anyone else.
- Traceability: batch codes on the box, so a problem can be isolated to a run rather than a product line.
Questions & answers
Common questions
- What is the cheapest way to start?
- Labels on a stock box for one high-volume line. It tests whether branding changes anything for your buyers before you commit to print runs.
- Can I private label brake pads?
- Technically yes. Consider carefully whether you want to be the producer of record on a safety-critical part, and make sure the approval position is clear first.
- How long does it take?
- Artwork and proof one to two weeks, box production two to three, then it runs alongside normal production.
